YOU ARE DIFFERENT FROM YOUR BODY

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Thessalonians 5:23

Three things are mentioned in this verse: your spirit, soul and body. That gives the impression that your spirit is different from your soul and your soul different from your body and your body is different from your spirit. Then in 2 Corinthians 5:8, Paul speaks about being absent from the body. Who is absent from his body? Obviously, it has to be a person different from the body. The person that is “you” is not your body, because if your body were “you,” then the Scripture won’t speak about being absent from “you.” You and your body are two different beings.

Your body is just like a cloak or something that you wear. When you see anyone in whatever the person is wearing, you say, “Look, he is coming.” If the person removes the outfit they are wearing, you will still say, “Look, he is coming,” with or without their clothes. However, the real you is not the body that you see.

Your body or outward man is perishing or is aging (2 Corinthians 4:16); but the real you will live forever. Under normal circumstances, a fifty year old man cannot be as strong as a twenty year old man. At fifty, you are not as strong as you were when you were twenty years old because the outward man is perishing, but the inward man is being renewed, strengthened and getting better. Hallelujah!

For those who are forty and above, have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and realized that you are really aging? The outward man is perishing, it became subject to death because Adam committed high treason. That process will continue till we receive our glorified bodies. Thank God the inner man is being renewed day by day. Although I recommend good eating habits and exercise to help your outward man live long, I choose to keep my focus on my inner man.

Confession: I am a spirit. My body is not the real me. Though my outward man perishes, my inward man is renewed day by day.
